Boat insurance is a specialized policy designed to protect your watercraft, its passengers, and your personal liability while on the water or during transport. While some homeowners' policies offer limited coverage for small boats, a dedicated boat insurance policy is essential because it covers risks unique to marine environments—such as sinking, capsizing, fuel spills, and specialized equipment theft. It is important because repair costs for hulls and marine engines are significantly higher than automotive repairs, and the liability risks associated with water sports or accidents are substantial. Having a policy ensures that a weekend at the lake doesn't turn into a lifelong financial burden due to an unforeseen mishap.

More Info
Most homeowners policies provide very limited coverage (usually up to $1,000 or $1,500) for small boats with low-horsepower engines. However, they rarely cover liability, specialized marine equipment, or environmental damage (like oil spills). For anything larger than a canoe or a small fishing boat, a separate marine policy is almost always necessary to ensure full protection.
Agreed Value: The insurer agrees to pay you a specific, pre-determined amount if the boat is a total loss, regardless of depreciation.
Actual Cash Value: The insurer pays the market value of the boat at the time of the loss, which accounts for depreciation and wear and tear. Agreed Value is generally preferred for newer or high-value vessels.
Certain states may require boat insurance by state law (unlike auto insurance) so it is good to check with your state. However, most marinas require proof of liability insurance to secure a slip, and if you have a loan on your boat, your lender will mandate comprehensive and collision coverage to protect their investment.
While your auto insurance liability might extend to the trailer while it is hitched to your vehicle, it typically won't cover damages to the boat itself if you're in an accident on the highway. A comprehensive boat insurance policy includes "trailer coverage" to protect the boat, the motor, and the trailer itself during transit.
This is a critical marine-specific feature. Standard policies might not cover a loss caused by "wear and tear," but "consequential damage" coverage ensures that if an excluded minor part (like a rusted through-hull fitting) fails and causes a major covered event (like the boat sinking), the major event is still covered.
